GAPS, Global Architecture of Planetary Systems

gapsGAPS is a long-term program for the comprehensive characterization of the architectural properties of planetary systems as a function of the hosts’ characteristics (mass, metallicity, environment).
The GAPS collaboration was set up at the end of 2011 in response to a solicitation formulated by the INAF Science Directorate to optimize the science return to the community of the HARPS-N @TNG open time.Â

Blocks that make up the mosaic of our understanding of the architecture of planetary systems are:

  • studying the frequency of low-mass planets as a function of stellar mass, stellar metallicity, density of the stellar environment;
  • characterizing known planetary systems, detailing mass, orbits, together with accurate measurements of masses, ages and activity of the host stars and its effect on the derivation of the planet parameters.

To fulfill these objectives the GAPS team joins expertise in high-resolution spectroscopy, stellar activity, crowded stellar environments, planetary systems formation, planetary dynamics, and data handling.
