DESCRIPTION:

Speaker: Paolo Giacobbe
(INAF)
\n
Titolo: “Retrieving the Atmospheres of Distant Worlds: Insi
ghts from High-Resolution Spectroscopy”
\n
Abstract: “High-resolution
(HR) transmission spectroscopy has demonstrated exceptional effectiveness
in detecting multiple molecular species in the atmospheres of exoplanets.
At HR\, molecular absorption bands are resolved into thousands of individ
ual spectral lines\, allowing for unambiguous identification of species th
rough line matching (e.g.\, via cross-correlation) with planetary model te
mplates\, even when most individual lines are buried within photon noise.
The next frontier is to connect the detection of molecular species to the
underlying chemical and physical properties of exoplanetary atmospheres. W
e discuss the prospects of this technique in the context of upcoming facil
ities\, such as the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT)\, highlighting its pot
ential to revolutionize our understanding of exoplanet atmospheres.”
\n
